That's the version you can use today. Here's what's coming.
⚠️ Worth being straight about: the agent editing, cross-device apps and batch rendering are the stated roadmap, not shipped features. What you get right now is a genuinely free browser editor. The rest is why it's worth watching early.
Where to go first
Two links, that's it:
- The repo — github.com/OpenCut-app/OpenCut — star it, read the roadmap, or dig into the code yourself — It's open source, so you're free to inspect or fork the code — just check the repo yourself for any self-hosting setup, since that isn't something I can confirm here.
- The editor and beta signup — opencut.app — open it in a tab and cut something in the next ten minutes.
If you've got a video sitting in your downloads folder right now, that's your test clip. Don't plan the migration. Just drag it in, trim it, export it, and see whether the thing you've been paying for every month is doing anything this can't.
You are my video editing assistant. I'm going to describe a video I want cut, and you'll give me a precise edit decision list I can execute in a timeline editor. MY RAW FOOTAGE: [describe clips, lengths, what happens in each] TARGET PLATFORM: [YouTube / Shorts / Reels / TikTok] TARGET LENGTH: [e.g. 45 seconds] GOAL: [e.g. get viewers to click a link in the description] Give me: 1. CUT LIST — exact timestamps to keep, in order, with a one-line reason for each. 2. HOOK — which 3 seconds open the video and why that beats the others. 3. DEAD AIR — timestamps to cut entirely (pauses, filler, repeated points). 4. TEXT OVERLAYS — the exact words, and the timestamp each appears. 5. B-ROLL CALLS — where the talking head gets boring and what should cover it. No explanations outside those five sections.
Run that against a transcript of your footage before you open any editor. You'll do the thinking once, then execute the list — which is the same shape the AI agent workflow will eventually take, just with you doing the clicking in the meantime.
Start with the editor, not the repo. Open opencut.app, upload one clip you already have, and cut a single short. If it holds up, sign up for the beta list while you're there — the maker says that's how you'll hear about new builds as they ship. — and cancel whatever you're paying monthly for the exact same thing.
